For four years now, thousands of Ukrainians — both military personnel and civilians — have been taken captive and disappeared behind the walls of Russian pretrial detention centers and penal colonies. Many Ukrainians are being held incommunicado, with no contact at all with the outside world; even their relatives do not know where their loved ones are now. In places of detention, the Russian authorities have created torture conditions: no medical care or hot water, food that is impossible to get full on, and daily beatings. Every minute of life depends on the whims of security officers or on orders handed down from above. And no one knows how it will end — in an exchange, a sentence, or death.
